More Hints, Tips and Advice

  • Although some Freelancer sites charge high monthly fees you will also be faced with fewer competitors for the projects.  As you gain confidence in freelancing you may benefit here.

  • Contact employers even if they don't accept your bid.  Ask them if you can forward them your resume / add them to your messenger buddies or add them to your mailing list so that you can keep in contact should they need somebody else in the future.

  • Ask for references when you've completed the work so that you can present them to new employers.  So few people bother asking for references these days that you'll have a nice advantage over your competitors if you develop them.

  • If you have good management skills then put together a team of Freelancers who are each capable of different jobs.  Bid for projects that may require a number of people and make money for yourself by dividing your fees between the other workers and keeping a profit for yourself.  Be very careful with this though.  I've employed managers like this who've tried hiding the fact that they are not doing any work themselves.  This manager was let down by a programmer and ended up losing his credibility when he couldn't deliver the work as promised.

  • After your work is over, make the effort to keep in touch with your employer.  There may be more work in the future, you may get new referrals and there is a chance that future work could be paid to you directly which may save you on fees.

Good Luck
