Get Started As a Freelancer - Consider Your Skills

You may have some unique skills that you can be competitive with.  Possibly you are experienced in creating websites, or writing articles or in graphic design but there's no need to limit yourself.  There are many projects out there that don't need any experience or skills for and if you feel you can do a project you've never done before, give it a try.  The worst that can happen is you apologize to your employer and refund him.

You will need to consider what skills and experience you have that you can do in your own time from home.  You don't need to limit yourself to computer-based work as you might be able to make money offline by making or answering telephone calls, assembling models, sewing or knitting, taking photographs etc.

There are some skills that are suited perfectly for online freelance work and I'll give you a very random list below just to give you an idea of how different they can be.

Graphic Design Building Websites Moderating Forums Consulting Article Submissions
Data Entry Online Research Updating Blogs Craft Work Writing
Translation Library Research Emailing to companies Writing Product Descriptions  Teaching
Search-Engine Submission Photography Inbound Telephone Work Adding Products to Auctions Reviewing
Using software to do repeated tasks Proof-Reading Typing Programming Multimedia Creation
Replying to company emails Tele-Sales Personal Assistant Customer Service  Interior Design
Posting in forums Online Support Hosting Accounting Credit Card Validation Event Planning

You don't need to be an expert at anything.  Most projects don't really require experts and as long as you are capable of doing a reasonable job.

There are so many software packages available nowadays that a complete beginner can usually find something they can create.  I have a friend who downloaded a free 30-day trial of a screensaver-creation program, and he offered his services online as a screensaver creator.
